Is community college a bad choice if you want to become a doctor? Help? 4

I have options open, but I want to apply to community college to save money. However, I heard medical schools look down upon community college students because their science classes are relatively easier. I want to do two years of community college, then transfer to Harvard Medical School. What should I do? Should I get a free tuition at a community college or should I pay and go to a university? Please help. Any advice is appreciated.
Sorry, I mean transfer to a 4 year university and then apply for medical school.

How much to charge for individual tutoring? 2

I want to tutor introductory science classes, but I have no idea how much a person in my position would charge. I have a BS degree in Molecular, Cellular, & Developmental Biology with honors. Additionally, I am an MD, PhD student at a top-ranked medical school. I have lots of experience tutoring classes. Anyone know how much is a good rate for individual tutoring?

Question about Graduate School Requirements (for Zoology/Biology)? 1

Hi, I’m a senior in college and I’m considering applying to both medical school and graduate school for a possible Phd in biology or zoology. I have no yet decided which way I want to go. I don’t graduate until next year, but I was wondering if anyone knows if you must major in biology or zoology as an undergraduate to pursue it in grad school. I have a double major in Kinesiology and Life Science (a specialized degree in science that focuses on biology). I will have taken all the core science classes (chem, physics, calc, bio, biochem, ochem, etc). Would this satisfy entry into a biology or zoology program? I’m also aware of the necessary GRE.

Thanks so much for your help.

What are my chances of getting into Medical School? 3

I am currently a second year undergraduate with an intended biology degree. My grades have not been so great. I currently have a 3.0 gpa as of my second semester freshman year. Also, my best grades have come from my non-science classes. I’m not sure how much I can raise my gpa by the end of my senior year. Do medical schools look at senior year grades? I belive it is early enough to switch my major if I don’t think I can make it into medical school. Can students in my postition usually raise their grades enough to be considered for medical school? Also, if I were able to raise my gpa to around a 3.4, is that still not acceptable for medical school admission? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you

Medical School graduates who didn't get a science degree as their Bachelors? 1

Okay so I’m going to pursue a medical career, but I was told by a teacher that medical schools look for people with many transferable skills…meaning I could get my bachelors in something non-science related but still take the classes needed for med school admission.
Now my question to you is, how difficult was it to balance your major along with the extra science classes you needed?

any info would be greatly appreciated.

medical school admission – somebody please help!!!? 2

first of all thank u for reading this, please bear with me…

i started college (university of michigan – dearborn) in sept 2004 as a biochem major bcos i wanted to go to medical school… the first semester there i took 3 science classes with labs and 1 advance math class – did horrible – i was homesick most of the time (i m from virginia and went to school in michigan)…

anyway, the next semester (jan 2005) i did much better and had good grades, however the following semester (fall 2005) i got involved in a pyramid scheme and was in this biz for next 1 year and while i was in it i totally ignored school and did horrible – i still managed to have atleast a 2.0 somehow so that i wont get kicked out…

after that thing was over i got involved in a long distance relationship starting jan 2007 which was even worse – the girl liked another guy, cheated, etc… i mean i was severly depressed for next two years until the begin of jan 2009 and i still somehow managed to stay in school but i finally got a word from them in sept 2008 that i have been officially kicked out – i only had 6 classes left to major in economics (i changed my major from biochem to accounting to finally economics bcos that was easier)… i pleaded n begged with them to get me back in just for 1 semester to finish my degree but they wont do anything…

anyway, finally i found out that excelsior college wud accept me and i wud be able to transfer in the classes i did earn somehow (from sept 2004 till sept 2008 i attempted 180 credits – crazy i know but was able to finish only 97 with 1.7 gpa final and hence i got kicked out bcos it is below 2)…

anyway so the point is – my college track record has been horrendous – prolly worse anybody has ever had – i know i m not dumb bcos i did well in the classes i actually attended and gave exams (usually got a’s and b’s) but my prob was not dropping classes on time and getting f’s which screwed up my gpa big time…

i have always wanted to go to medical school – i still do and i really do think i can pull off atleast a 40 on the mcat but my problem is my track record – i just dont know what to do…

i was wondering if somebody had any suggestions…

i m struggling with questions like if i finish my degree with excelsior wud it b good enough for med school? wud they recognize their classes as legit? i really dont know what to do… i m really lost… please help…. and thanks again for reading this…

Pursue passion and apply to medical school? Please read my story and give your thoughts? 2

Here is my story:
I am an undegraduate economics student and will receive a B.S. in Economics this December. My final undergraduate GPA will be between a 3.64 and 3.74 depending on my performance this semester. I have taken mathematics courses up to Calculus III and Differential Equations. I made an A in Calculus I, an A in Calculus II, a B in Calculus III, and an A in Differential Equations. I have taken the equivalent of Chemistry I at my university, but I made a B ( so very close to an A) in the lecture and a B in the lab. I took this my first semester in college, so I was not the seasoned student that I am now. Getting a "B" in CHEM I deterred me from pre-med because I was under the impression that you had to make all A’s in the majority of your pre-medical science classes. During the 2007 and 2008 my grandfather become ill and I withdrew from several classes to provide a lot of his care. I was under the impression that a medical school admissions committee would frown upon so many W’s (about 20 to be exact). The point of this is that I consistently come back to the idea of applying to medical school. It has always been a passion of mine, but I let things get in my way. Applying to medical school will involve a lot of sacrifice on my part because I have already been accepted into graduate school to receive a Master of Accountancy. My heart is not in Accountancy. My heart is in learning medicine. I do not have clinical/healthcare experience, but I am willing to put all of my energy into gaining experience. What kind of clinical experience do you suggest? I am in the process of finding a volunteer opportunity that I can stick with until I apply to medical school.

I want to put myself in a position to be competitive for medical school. I know what I have to do and I am willing take the steps necessary to achieve my goal. This is about pursuing my passion. I have a lot of doors open to me (graduate school, internships at Big 4 accounting firms, scholarships), but they are not the right doors for me. I attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine when I was in high school and I witnessed a lot of things when we went on our clinical rotations. I remember seeing an emergency tracheostomy on a patient and how I wanted to be the one providing the care and implementing the knowledge I gained through med school.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Medical School Questions Re:Admissions? 1

I’m an undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. I’m definitely going to finish up my last two years of this degree, but then I’m hoping to switch gears and go to med school. I have a few questions:

1) I have science and math courses that I need to take, according to the UCLA med school requirements (that’s where I most want to go). All I have done is a physics course with the lab, and I got a C in it. I wasn’t very motivated, being a music major and all. Assuming I try really hard and get the A’s and B’s I know I can get in the rest of the science classes, should I be ok GPA-wise to get into as good of a school as UCLA? If not, how should I go about retaking it, since it’s too high of a grade for me to do a grade-replacement thing?

2) I’m planning on getting licensed as an EMT-basic this fall. I feel like it would be a good idea for me, since I lack any medical experience. Should I volunteer as well, and, if so, in what field and where? I do have to finish up the degree I am currently working toward (I need at least four hours of practice a day), so I can’t spend too much time on this. What extracurriculars will make me competitive with my peers who are pursuing medical-related undergraduate degrees?

3) Do you have any other advice for me regarding getting into the medical school of my dreams? I think I am capable of the work (I am very dedicated to whatever my main field of study is), but I am nervous about changing from music to medicine.

Thanks for your help!

Is it important to go to a university for your undergrad if you want to get into medical school? 2

I’m getting ready to start going to college to get a 4 year degree, and I’ll be taking the math and science classes needed for the MCAT. I was planning on going to a community college for the first 2 years to take my math and sciences, then transfer to a university for the 3rd and 4th year, but I’ve heard that medical schools look down on that, and it’s better to take all of those classes at a university. Does anyone know if that’s true?
