Medical School Admissions? Please help..honest experienced answer please? 3

Hi guys,

I’m currently a pre-med sophomore working on bachelors of science in Honors Biology (not as a tool to get into medical school but because I truly love it) with University Honors as a Co-Major. I have a 4.0 GPA, taken 26 Honors credits and 49 total credits so far….From the Math and Science I’ve taken:

Honors Biodiversty
Honors Cell Biology
Honors Microbiology
General Chemistry
Genetics
Honors Physics 1
Statistics

More to come as the winter semester starts…..I volunterred a total of about I think 60 hours at children’s hospital all summer, both in the playroom and bedside.

I’ve worked on two research projects, one as part of class in the emergency department and another on my own which isnt related to medicine at all and is more of history thing.

I’m hoping to volunteer in one of my professors lab this winter semester so that in the Summer I can hopefully start my own science research project.

I’m in a few clubs as school but honestly I don’t keep in touch at all…

So far…what do you guys think I’m on the right track? I’m worried my volunteering and clubs wont be enough for medical school admissions so I was hoping to get some feedback..Thanks

Medical School vs. Graduate School…HELP!? 2

I am currently a Sophomore at Penn State University Park and am still undecided if I would rather go to grad school or med school. My major is neuroscience. I started as a freshman wanting to do neurosurgery but decided it was too demanding of a life style for me and that the schooling would be to long so I decided I wanted to do clinical psychology and research. After looking into it a little more I discovered that I would have to get my masters and PhD (which I was planning on doing anyway) and then do 1-2 years pretty much shadowing someone before I could work with my own patients. I also would rather be able to give out medication to my patients if they need it which means I should go into psychiatry. I did some research and found that I would need 4 years of med school and then 4 years of residency (which is about the same amount of time I would be spending in education if I decided to go to grad school and then peruse clinical psychology).

I am not sure what to do at all and I have to decide soon since one typically takes the MCATs or GRE their junior year.

Another concern is that I have some of the classes that are "required" for med school admissions but not all of them. I have a decent amount of bio, and chem, but I have yet to take physics and an Organic Chemistry part II and Calc. Would I still be able to get into med school if I took these classes during the summer or just studied from the MCAT book?

As you can see I am very confused as to what to do. Any information you can give me would be appreciated!

Do I have a chance at Med School admission? 3

Not so much concerned about the interview-it should be fine.

Should I mention God in my personal statement to medical schools? 7

I am a firm believer that God put all here for a very specific purpose and I am certain that my calling is to become a medical doctor. He worked through people in my life to inspire me and this is what I am going to do with my life. In my personal statement, I will of course talk about the people in my life that have inspired me, but should my faith be mentioned? I know that God made me for this, and though I may not be the applicant with the highest scores, I know that I will certainly be at the top of the list for those with true passion. I may not be the best chemistry or physics person, but I WILL BE THE BEST DOCTOR! Should I mention that?

Questions About Med School Admissin Requirements? 2

I’m about to complete my time in community college and enter a university as a third-year student. I’m considering medical school after I complete my bachelors, but such a decision is far from concrete at this point.

I looked up the required courses for admission to several medical schools and most of them require one year of biology, English, physics, etc. What I’m unsure about is what they mean by "one year." Does it mean that I’d have to take one of each course per semester for a year, or that I’d have specifically focus on each field for a year each?

I need help getting into University of Toronto Medical School? 2

I just started grade 11 in high school and really want to become a doctor/surgeon somewhere from to Neurology. I heard many universities look at grade 9 10 11 12 grades. That worries my because i only got a 85 average for the year+exams) at gr.10 and maybe worst at 9. I hope in getting 90+ in both 11 and 12.

What are the requirements for a international undergraduate student to get accepted into U o T Medical school? My school has a American system (not IB) and i have to do both SAT and TOEFL this year. Plus we take biology gr.10 chemistry gr.11 and physics at 12 full units. I got a 87 at Biology at 10 does this mean i’m screwed when U o T looks at my grades? What are the required average or grades for each subject to get in to U o F,

PLEASE HELP
can’t i get my 4 year degree at U o T then go to med school?

What should I major in if I want to go to nursing school? 2

My college does not offer a nursing major. Therefore, I would have to fulfill the nursing school pre-req classes, and have some other major.

I am currently an undergraduate biology major, and I am finding a lot of the classes I am taking (physics, organic chemistry, etc.) are very challenging and time-consuming, yet they are not necessary for nursing school. Most people at my school who are biology majors are pre-med, and the courses taken in the major fulfill medical school requirements. I do not want my new major to be too intensive, so that I can complete the extra nursing school pre-req classes on top of it. However, I also do not want a major that will appear as a joke to graduate schools.

I’m thinking about kinesiology or psychology. Any thoughts? I appreciate any advice!

Haven't started college yet, want to go into Medical School after I get my undergrad degree… but? 6

I didn’t do well in High School. I graduated with a 2.0, not because I had learning problems or anything, but because I just never bothered with the homework, studying, projects, etc. I always did well on tests, but never studied for them. I believe the major reasoning behind this was, I was never introduced to interesting subject, nor did I have my head on straight (I mean I was 14-16 years old). After my junior year though, my family moved to Arizona, and instead of finishing the year at the local high school, I just completed my remaining credits (4) online. That year I got nothing less than a 90% in each class. After graduating, I don’t know what happened, but I have major interests in a lot of subjects. My highest level of math from high school was Algebra. But since then, I’ve taught myself a great deal of Calculus and Physics; be it from books at the library, online research, lectures and documentaries, and what-have-you. I’m extremely interested now in going into the medical field, but I don’t have the grades to get into a state college for my first two-years of undergrad. I know for certain once I’m in college I’ll be at the top of my class and everything. I’m 19 years old at the moment, I’ll be starting class in January (going to take the SAT/ACT in the next 4 months and score as high as I possibly can, to help my odds), and the only seemingly plausible option is a local college.

This college was* previously a Community College, but no longer is considered such. After two-years, I was thinking of transferring credits to a State College, from there I’ll finish the premed requirements and apply for Medical School.

Leaving that behind you, and now that you’re well-knowledged on my past; I have a few questions:

1.) Will Medical Schools turn me down, because of my High School grades?
2.) Do Medical Schools have dormitories?
3.) I obviously can’t pay for Medical School out of pocket, so I’ll have to resort to Financial Aid/Student loans… between the two (and whatever else is available), will it cover tuition costs 100%?
4.) If I have to work to feed myself, and/or pay for tuition, is it possible to do that and go to Medical School?

I’m extremely motivated to get this done, I realize I’ll be in school/residency for the next 12+ years, I know it’s hard and I’m 100% going for it… I’m just looking for some reassurance/answers here.

Thank you for taking your time to read this.
*Do I have to have credit to take out Student Loans?

I have not taken physics in high school. Can I take it in university so I can go to medical school.? 2

Is there any medical schools that do not require physics?

When I am done with my BA, I will not have all of the pre med classes, could I still get into medical school?? 6

I am graduating with a Psych. degree next spring, but I know now I want to go to medical school to be a neurolgist. The psych classes have shown me this is what I need to do. I plan to take the MCAT this summer. I have an excellent GPA and General Bio. and Chem classes and labs, Math, Stats, Organic Chem and Lab. I won’t have anatomy and will only have one semester of those listed above and physics. Could I possibly get into medical school without the full requirements?
My GPA btw is 3.88 and I have been told that your ACT score is comparable to your MCAT. I made a 31 on my ACT and a 34 in science in 2005. I will be graduating undergrad a year early if that helps me at all.
Okay the classes I have exactly are one semester each for:
Statistics(6 hrs)
Organic Chem and Lab (4 hrs)
Inorganic Chem and Lab (4 hrs)
Calculus(4 hrs)
General Biology and Lab (4 hrs)
and a year of English, History, Spanish, Humanities, and other Gen Ed classes. If I could take 4 hrs of Physics and 1 more class of Bio, Organic Chem, and Inorganic chem would that be enough.
Also does it matter what level the classes are, ex. My Chem are 105 and 107 not 201 and 202.
