Question by Holly C: From what undergraduate colleges do the top medical schools get the majority of their students from?
What schools have been the most successful for getting their graduates into the top medical schools? Where can I find this information? I am interested in all colleges and medical schools but am slightly partial to University of Washington School of Medicine. Thank you in advance for your time.

Best answer:

Answer by J
The Association of American Medical Colleges tracks that, as well as other data: http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/

Be a bit careful in accepting any data at face value. The fact that the ABC school had 238 medical school applicants accepted doesn’t infer that it is a better school than XYZ college that had 64 students accepted. XYZ may have only had 72 students in pre-med and ABC may have had 435.

Acceptance into a medical school is based on individual merit. The name of the school on your diploma has little impact on whether the school likes you versus somebody else.

Thanks in advance =]

Answer by Emily M
In the USA, you have to take at least four years of undergraduate science courses in college before you can start medical school. If you do not take any science in high school, you may have to take more science in college and your science courses in college may be more difficult for you than for your classmates.

While it may seem like a depressing way to start an explanation of what it takes to be a doctor, it does give a realistic and honest look at the profession. Being a doctor pays well, yes, but is also fatiguing and challenging. “I Am a Doctor” is based on a real life doctor’s diary and serves not so much as a way to scare people away from the medical field, but

Question by Ailenroc: Which canadian high schools have the highest % of students going to the top medical Universities in toronto?
I am going to grade 10 next in 2007 sept. Which Toronto high school do you recommend?

Best answer:

Answer by reginachick22
I just wanted to mention that it will be your *university* undergrad grades that will determine if you get into medical school (along with your interview and MCAT).

I would think that any high school in Canada will sufficiently prepare you for a pre-med program, provided you take the proper pre-requisites. Those being chemistry, physics, biology (recommended), and the highest level of math (usually calculus, but some schools only offer pre-calculus. This is usually fine).

You can look into private schools (if your family can afford it), or schools with a strong science and math program. You also might want to look for a school that promotes volunteer and leadership programs. Here is a website for T.O. high schools:

http://www.toronto.net/Secondary_Schools.html

Again, I can’t stress enough that while a good school helps, it is really the amount of work you put into it. The circular is the same across the province for the most part. You would need to ask your school guidance counsellor for more specific info or stats.
