So I am a junoir in high school with a 3.5 GPA and 1800 SAT.
I come from one of the top 100th public schools in the nation and can get into some pretty good undergrad programs. I want to have a general plan for my future though. I want to be a pschiatrist so Medical school will be in my future. I very much like New York city. I am extremley independent and I would have no problem going to CUNY Hunter or another cheap school, finding a roomate and getting an undergrad degree with all honors and a estimated GPA between 3.8-4.0. I want to go to a medical school in New york city. But, I could also go to a much better undergrad program , prob get a 3.7 without honors but more expensive. My family is pretty well off but I dont want them to pay for everything and if I went to a new york city school I could probably hold a job. I am very mature and can fit in with city life , dorms and all that college baggage I could live with but I can also live without.

My Uncle went to Columbia University so I might have a slight shot their. What should I do? Where should I begin? Should I go to a harder better undergrad program or a decent one that is cheaper in the city where I will probably got to medical school. I am from southern California and My uncle lives near new york and is a dentist(MD) .

So what undergrad program seems like the best and smarter, better choice all around. When should I start studying for the MCATS and what are some good majors (pre-med/chem./bio ….)

I want to know if I can still go to medical school if I go to a state university instead of a UC. If I get a good gpa and do well on my mcat at a state university can I still get into medical school. Do medical schools prefer UC graduates over CSU graduates?

If you take courses in community college and transferred them…would medical school frowns upon that? Would it better to not get a not so much high GPA at a top university….or would it be better to get a high GPA for the first two years at a community college for medical school?

Also when applying to teh Optometry program at UC Berkeley….do they look at my GPA from my GE courses or only my GPA from my major (microbiology) courses?

I’m still in high school, but I have plans to get into the guaranteed admission program at the University of Pittsburgh. (You have to keep a certain GPA while getting a bachelors degree there, and then they keep a spot open for you at one of their graduate schools) If I were smart enough to get into the program and I successfully earned my MD, how would I go about getting to work at a prestigious research hospital? I’m thinking a hospital like the John Hopkins hospital.
I don’t mean the PHD/MD program(Although that would be ideal for me, it’s so competitive that I’m afraid I don’t have what it takes), I mean you get your bachelors degree and then they let you into the medical school. No PHDs involved.

More to come as the winter semester starts…..I volunterred a total of about I think 60 hours at children’s hospital all summer, both in the playroom and bedside.

I’ve worked on two research projects, one as part of class in the emergency department and another on my own which isnt related to medicine at all and is more of history thing.

I’m hoping to volunteer in one of my professors lab this winter semester so that in the Summer I can hopefully start my own science research project.

I’m in a few clubs as school but honestly I don’t keep in touch at all…

So far…what do you guys think I’m on the right track? I’m worried my volunteering and clubs wont be enough for medical school admissions so I was hoping to get some feedback..Thanks

I know the odds for Law school are most likely going to be greater. But somewhere I heard that the Undergrad degree choice really doesn’t matter — really only your GPA along with your MCAT scores is what forms your admission profile.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I have heard that GPA matters more than the undergraduate school one went to. Is this true? Hypothetically speaking, if one student got a 3.9 GPA at an average state school and another person got a 3.4 GPA at an Ivy League/High quality public school, would the 3.9 GPA look better? And does somebody with a GPA in the 3.3-3.6 range have a chance to get into a top-notch medical school?
Any ideas at all?

As a senior in high school who knows that he wants to become a doctor, I have a question about medical school admissions. Would a medical school prefer an undergraduate student who earned around a 3.5 at Duke or a 3.9 at Iowa? I realize that there are many critical factors besides GPA that go into the admissions process, but I am just wondering.
Also, if you said "Duke" as the answer for the question above, I have another question. My dad says that, for example, Iowa medical school would prefer the 3.9 at Iowa over 3.5 at Duke just because the undergraduate student went to Iowa originally. Is that true? Any help would be nice. Thanks.

I’m going to be starting college in fall of 2010 and the university of rochester. i’m going there for pre-med, but for my graduate studies i really want to attend johns hopkins medical school. i know it’s really competitive, and i was wondering if anyone knew any of the requirements for getting into johns hopkins? like for mcat scores, gpa, courses, extracurriculars, and anything else i may need?
