I am currently a Sophomore at Penn State University Park and am still undecided if I would rather go to grad school or med school. My major is neuroscience. I started as a freshman wanting to do neurosurgery but decided it was too demanding of a life style for me and that the schooling would be to long so I decided I wanted to do clinical psychology and research. After looking into it a little more I discovered that I would have to get my masters and PhD (which I was planning on doing anyway) and then do 1-2 years pretty much shadowing someone before I could work with my own patients. I also would rather be able to give out medication to my patients if they need it which means I should go into psychiatry. I did some research and found that I would need 4 years of med school and then 4 years of residency (which is about the same amount of time I would be spending in education if I decided to go to grad school and then peruse clinical psychology).

I am not sure what to do at all and I have to decide soon since one typically takes the MCATs or GRE their junior year.

Another concern is that I have some of the classes that are "required" for med school admissions but not all of them. I have a decent amount of bio, and chem, but I have yet to take physics and an Organic Chemistry part II and Calc. Would I still be able to get into med school if I took these classes during the summer or just studied from the MCAT book?

As you can see I am very confused as to what to do. Any information you can give me would be appreciated!

I want to major in some area of science because that’s my interest and I either want to become a surgeon or go into research, specifically in genetic engineering. I was thinking biology, biochemistry, or just chemistry. Would one be better/provide a better foundation or does it not make any difference, and do you have any other suggestions?

ok im confused. I would like to attend Harvard to obtain my bachelor’s, and then I would like to go to medical school. Is Harvard Medical School a good choice? or is John Hopkins better?

oh and I’m a freshman so any advice on how to even get on the right track? and any prerequisites? I would like to become a heart surgeon. so any info about MCAT? what’s pre-med?

Do not say: "take biology or chemistry". All students need is to take prerequisites and you can get into med school.

Hi, I am from Guam and I have dreamed of taking medicine. I know that there is a university here and it is accredited. Do I have a high chance of getting in a U.S. medical school from University of Guam? I am planning to major in Biology, which is only what the university offers. What should I do now, as a freshman, to increase my chances?
