Fun Medical School? 0

It’s a cruel reality for would be medical students. Every year over 39,000 folks apply for admission to a US medical school, but only about 47% are admitted. What do the remaining 53% do? Well, instead of sitting around feeling sorry for themselves, a substantial number are running away to an island and going to medical school. One vacationer’s gorgeous tropical island is an additional student’s campus. Some are gaining as great a reputation as those within the United States. Within the late 1970’s Caribbean islands realizing that tourism could be fickle began to look for other streams of income. They hit upon the thought of medical schools, primarily for US students who had been being shut out of medical schools within the United States. In a short time St Georges University in Grenada, (which benefitted from some unsuspecting exposure when the US invaded Grenada in 1983) Ross University on the island of Dominica as well as the American University of the Caribbean, originally on the island of Monserrat, opened their doors. They were and are extremely prosperous. Inside the years that followed it seemed a medical school opened on nearly each Caribbean island. The selection became as significantly about the high quality of the education as what the island itself offered. No 1 can doubt the success of St Georges University in Grenada. It was so prosperous, they’ve branched out to include a school of veterinary medicine, a school of arts and sciences and a graduate studies program. But maybe you can’t take the steamy heat in Grenada. Maybe diving is your pastime. If so, head to Bonaire, the island recognized for its incredible diving and enroll in St James School of Medicine. The remote island of Sint Eustasius, (St Statia), is also recognized for its underwater beauty also as the University of Sint Eustasius Medical School. In case you get bored there, head to its neighbor island Saba and attend the University School of Medicine. Is a rainforest additional your interest? Half of Belize is covered by rainforest and it has 3 medical schools, Grace University School of Medicine, Central American Health Sciences University plus the American Global University School of Medicine. Should you prefer your Caribbean islands with a Dutch influence, head for the Lesser Antilles. You’ll be able to attend St Martinus in Curacao, or Xavier Univerity School of Medicine in Aruba, which has the added benefit of no MCATS for admission. Maybe the island of Nevis can tempt you with the Medical University of the Americas. Its neighbor, the island of St Kitts is positively flush with medical schools such as St Theresa Medical University, Windsor University School of Medicine, and the University of Medicine and Health Sciences. The choice is yours.

With so several offerings, how do you select? Price is a large concern of course. All offer financial aid, though some are much cheaper than other people. Saba boasts a price of around ten thousand dollars a semester, considerably cheaper than its US competitors and also the island competitors of St Georges University in Grenada and Ross University in Dominica. Way of life is really a factor too. The island of Dominica is significantly much less “Americanized” as far as food and shopping than either Grenada or Belize. The high quality of education is also a major factor. All Caribbean medical students must take United States Licensing Exam, the USLE, after their second year of medical school. Grenada leads all the other islands with a initial time pass rate of 84.4 percent. Dominica comes in second at 69.7 percent, while St Lucia scores a dismal 19.4 percent. Compare that to the US/Canada pass rate of around 95 percent, and you may see what you might be up against. Whilst the top quality of the Caribbean schools might not equal those within the United States, for a significant population of wish to be medical students, it is the only option. Besides, you know what they call the St Lucia medical student who got the lowest passing score on the USLE? Doctor.

Question by Lexie: What is the best college to go to before medical school and medical school?
I was just looking into my future and want to get on track. I want to be a Pediatric Neurologist. What would be a good school to go to before medical school? What should I major in to get a better chance to get accepted into medical school? What is the best Medical School to go to? My limit is the U.S. Thanks!

Sorry there are so many questions.

Answer by ownpool
Save money and get a good pre-med education by taking your pre-med bachelor’s degree at your state university. Any academic major is fine so long as you take and pass with top grades the pre-med classes listed on medical school websites. Medical schools want a well-rounded class with students from many different majors.

The best medical school to attend is the only one which accepts a student out of the fifteen to which many students apply. The competition is that tough. You go where you are admitted.

Question by mohammedshsh: Is it harder to find a job after Medical school if you attended a public medical school?
Since public medical schools are muuch cheaper and aren’t really Top Medical schools, is it harder to find a job after medical school? Does it really matter?

Best answer:

Answer by korax777
Mo baby, come on! Look at the top 20 medical schools many are public institutions. Also, your question really varies with what kind of physician or surgeon you want to become. For example, if you wish to be a neurosurgeon at Harvard and then do research at the Howard Hugh Medical Center at NIH -yes it helps to be the best of the best. However, if you wish to be a family practice physician in eastern Montana then there are tonnes of underserved communities awaiting you and your skills.

The experience I had was the lesser students often went to the private medical schools. Ironically they then became disporportionately sub specialists to pay off their larger loans. The better applicants took the spots at the public med schools (IT WAS CHEAPER).

Most of the applicants just want to get into a medical school, but for those with multiple acceptances price became a secondary item of notice.

Just remember my friend its often what you get out of yourself and not what others put into you that yields the better doctor. Also, you know what they call the guy who graduates last from medical school….doctor.

If u graduate high school at 18 and go straight to college how old will you be when you become a first year intern??
Do you go straight to medical school after high school? or do you have to do another course/major and then medical school??
thanks so much!

Best answer:

Answer by Nancy C
In Europe you go to Medical School right off high school if you get admitted through entrance exams.

In the U.S. first you get a Bachelor’s Degree, preferrably in Biology. Then you take an exam to get admitted to Medical School. It’s very competitive because doctors make a lot of money in the U.S.

Question by Ryan: After high school should I go to university abroad, then go to medical school back at home?
After high school I would like to be a doctor, but I want to experience somewhere else in the world. So I was thinking I should maybe go to university to get my bachelors degree in California (I live in Canada) or England or somewhere; then come back to Canada for medical school and the rest of my life. Or do the opposite, stay here for the degree, and go to medical school abroad? Can you move around the world with a medical degree? And how much do you think ALL my schooling will cost? Including my bachelors degree and medical school? Is going to medical school to be a doctor hard? And should I take all three sciences (chemistry, biology, and physics) in high school? Or is that too much?

Best answer:

Answer by papyrusbtl
You’ve got to break it down—plan only a year ahead, mentally and emotionally. You do not want to get “burned out”, and it’s really easy to do these days.
Just assume it will cost a lot, and be tedious, backbreaking, challenging work—you cannot do it all at once, so you shouldn’t be thinking about it all at once. What’s important in the long run is not only your final goal, but taking very good care of yourself (probably the first thing they will tell you in Medical School.).
Don’t worry about things you cannot control—but keep your basic goal in mind when you make daily decisions.
Whatever you do, though, don’t miss the opportunity to go to Europe for a vacation—it’s an important part of life, that you shouldn’t miss.

I go to Ohio State University and have a 3.6 gpa and im a paramedic. I wasn’t excepted into medical school but I got into PA school. Was thinking about doing the whole pa thing for a few years then going to medical school.

Best answer:

Answer by answerman
You really shouldn’t waste your time and money going to PA school, it will probably be around 100k in debt to go to PA school and a couple years longer before you get to medical school, then to turn around and go another couple hundred thousand for medical school…doesn’t make much sense. I suggest you continue working as a medic and then apply to more medical schools next year if that is what you want to do.

Question by lola454: MEDICAL SCHOOL???????
i am a high school student goin 2 into 10th grade this yr and i want 2 become a doctor not sure wut kind yet but i need some help i was doin research and i am very confuced by the whole ungrad and grad stuff i know that i have 2 have my bachlors degree before goin 2 medical school but im jus confused and not sure wut i should major in college VERY CONFUSED

and 1 more thign wut kinda gpa should i maintain throughout high school and wut r some of the best school i should go 2????

Best answer:

Answer by Dorothy K
Hi Lola. You want to become a doctor do ya? Good career goal! For now, since you’re still in high school, your primary focus should be on maintaining a 3.5 out of 4.0 scale, taking the PSAT in Sophomore year, take the ACT in Junior Year, get 3 letters of recommendation to the college(s) of your choice, start doing community service at a hospital or clinic, and join a club or two and be a very active member. That will look very good on your college applications.

Then when you go to college to work on getting your Bachelors Degree (this is known as your undergraduate degree) you can literally major in anything you want- even history or art. You will not actually major in Pre-med, because that is not an actual major, at least not at most colleges. Instead you will meet with an advisor in the pre-med program who will help you choose math and science courses that will be advantageous to getting you admitted to medical school. Most students choose to major in a science so that they can fulfill the requirements for their degree while simultaneously fulfilling the math and science requirements to get into med school. Many students choose to major in Biochemistry, but again, you do not necessarily have to.

What you absolutely have to do as an undergraduate student is maintain a 3.5 overall/cumulative gpa, and (preferably) at least a 3.75 in your major. You will then take what is called the MCAT which is the medical school entrance exam, while you are in your junior year of college. Then you will find 3 (new) people to write you letters of recommendation for medical school (which could also be called grad school since you already graduated with your bachelors from college), apply, get accepted and so on.

The best school depends on you- I’d say Johns Hopkins, but there are many, many great schools to choose from.

Question by JuJu Bean: Medical School?
As for my concern of about medical school. I would like to know a few things about it. How many years of studies is medical school ? Do you have to get a degree in medicine prior getting into medical school ? How much will medical school cost ? Is medical school competitive ? What type of common pre-requisites are required for admission into medical school ?

Best answer:

Answer by eri
1) Medical school is 4 years.
2) You need a 4-year degree to apply to medical school, but there’s no medical major. To fulfill premed requirements, you probably want to major in bio and chem, but as long as you pass the MCATs, it doesn’t matter what you major in.
3) A lot. 40k a year and up.
4) Yes, it is very competitive getting in and staying in.
5) Usually people major in bio and chem, and take calculus and several semesters of physics as well to prepare for the MCATs.

Question by neil_yoshi: Medical school?
Im thinking of going to medical school in india and coming back to america to practice. Do you guys have any thoughts on that?

My sister is doing the same thing and she can come back to practice after she passes the USMLE, and the school im planning to go to is pretty good.

Best answer:

Answer by Llani
First of all, are you absolutely sure that you will be able to practice medicine here when you come back? Because the US does not just accept medical degrees from other countries. And passing the USMLE does not guarantee that they take you.
Apart from that, why do you want to go to a medical school in India, when you have the very best training right here in America? This is the place where the best work and ground breaking research is done. And the better your med school, the better the job you eventually get.
But the med schools here are elite and very hard to get into.

What do you think? Answer below!
